Social Media sucks.

There, I said it.

If you are a business owner who wears all the hats in your business, you know what I am talking about. I have been one for almost seven years now, and being responsible for pre-sales, sales, onboarding, driving, cleaning, accounting, therapeutic sessions, creating, controlling, supporting…can be exhausting.

Now add content creation to that scenario, and a whole new world opens up in front of your already tired eyes: strategizing, creating, curating, implementing, posting, liking, commenting, following, DMing, hashtaging, influencing, erasing, starting over. Adding to that, we’re not even at the end of January, and the platforms are already buzzing with everything from Bernie Sanders and Weeknd memes, to viral ‘Internet Drama’ TikToks, and you-know-who being banned from multiple platforms. How can we keep up with all that and follow the trends??

After all these years working in the online content and social media industry, I can tell you one thing: many small business owners don't have a huge following but are happily busy and making money. They have set up their small, but loyal audience, they can count on their regular clients, and are optimistic about their future. Plus, they don’t post much on social media, which could mean they’re too busy at thriving, perhaps?

I bet they want to expand, though. Having a good income, with good clients, and good intentions is, well, a good thing. But is that all? How can people find you and choose between you and your competitors? How can they reach out quickly, send a message and ask questions? How can they get to know you better? Most importantly, how can you advertise your packages, giveaways, freebies, share news, your change of address, new team members, and case studies, if not on social media?

My prediction for 2021? Companies that communicate with a transparent, purposeful tone of voice on social, environmental, and ethical causes will be the ones to go viral and truly resonate with people. Also, social ROI can often be tricky to prove, so keep in mind that:

·         Your customers and prospects are on social media. This is a great philosophy to keep in mind as a business.

·         Staying active and up-to-date on social media means better, faster, customer service.

·         Instead of reaching 20 or even 200 contacts, you can reach thousands of prospects within minutes.

·         Social media helps your business gain access to the individuals you can’t reach in any other way.

·         Being a relevant content provider (and not just a consumer) on social media is the key to maintaining top-of-mind awareness.
